Garden within a parklike environment on a South Waikato dairy farm

Photos

The Garden

High in the hills south east of Te Awamutu, at Arohena, the garden has been established over 40 years from a bare paddock. The background is a remnant stand of mature native forest. Four hectares of exotic mature trees including a large natural pond surrounds the one hectare garden. The garden features a range of plantings of intimate spaces to enjoy all year round. This is a "gardener's" informal garden focusing on plants rather than hard landscaping. There are spring bulbs, a rock garden, rhododendrons and azaleas, roses, perennials, favoured shrubs, a stumpery and a vegetable potager. This is a comfortable garden with many places to sit. The climate can be cooler than lower areas of the Waikato - a warm jacket is recommended. View Map
