The Garden

Hortensia House, named after the French word for hydrangea, is the private homestead and garden of Georges and Huguette Michel. It was Huguette's love of hydrangeas that inspired the title. She has reflected her love of these old favourites in the recently planted hydrangea hedge outlining the driveway, which brings welcome colour throughout the summer.

The Monet-inspired garden is informal in design and is loosely themed on blue and yellow capturing an essence of serenity and reflecting the colours of the house. Huguette's favourite shade of hydrangea is blue and these along with lavenders, for-get-me-not's, love-in-a-mists among others provide the blue tones throughout the garden. Yellow is provided by various varieties of roses including 'Pimpernel' and 'Graham Thomas', other favourites include pansies, daisies, aquilegias, and gazanias. The desire to have flowers in the garden all year is reflected in the large variety of species to be found in the garden.

Numerous roses add a vibrant splashes of colour among the hundreds of native plants and fruits trees. Among the many fruit trees on the property are red cherry guava, weeping white mulberry and a beautiful persimmon tree outside the kitchen window.

Huguette and Georges welcome you to come and experience their stunning garden. As you stroll along the bank down an inviting shaded pathway enjoy the mass plantings of arum lilies relaxing in the cool waters of Spring Creek. To enhance your garden experience, most plants have been labelled. View Map

The Gardener

As a little girl, Huguette had a passion for photographing plants and flowers, meticulously naming each on the back of the photo. She still enjoys this hobby and comments that through photography, her vision of the world has changed. Huguette displays a certain charm, elegance and energy, together with a strong French accent, befitting such a garden. In fact, she and her husband Georges were born and raised on tiny French tropical Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. With a keen eye for detail and good grasp of colour complements, Huguette sticks to her preference for “masses of flowers in not too much bright colours, more like an Impressionist painting.” Huguettes husband Georges Michel former owner of Chateau de Grandmont (a wine estate in the French wine region of Beaujolais/Burgundy), Frenchman Georges Michel was already heartedly enamoured by wine when he and his family decided to move to New Zealand.

La Veranda is part of the Georges Michel Estate complex, where visitors can choose a selection of wine tasting ‘flights’, matched with French degustation plates. For example, enjoy four of our Golden Mile wines featuring Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Rose, with a plate of imported French cheeses or a selection of French 'charcuterie'.

Nestled amongst the vines and bathed in Marlborough’s prolific sunshine, La Veranda is the perfect venue to rest and relax in a very special ambiance, either indoors or outdoors.
