About Our Attraction

Middle Rock Station offers visitors a comprehensive farm tour experience in the scenic Lake Coleridge high country just one hour’s drive west of Christchurch. Bordered by the braided Rakaia River, the property farms over 7,000 sheep producing fine wool for the apparel trade and export lamb for international meat markets. A large garden, framed by panoramic views of the Mt Hutt range, is a feature of the property. On site, local visitors can purchase from the garden’s plant nursery which sells hardy perennial plants sourced from the homestead garden.

Owners, Bruce and Lyn, have farmed Middle Rock since 1973. Recently they have been joined by their daughter, Charlotte. The family has enjoyed hosting international guests, families, conference visitors and local community groups for over 15 years.

A day of farms, gardens, history, heritage and traditional rural hospitality in the Lake Coleridge high country.

This popular day tour begins with a visit to The Point Station, an historic farming property at Windwhistle. Over morning tea with the owners, an overview of the property is given, guests take a tour of the large garden and conclude with a glimpse into the historic homestead.

Lunch is at Middle Rock. Guests are welcomed by the owners, there’s time for a leisurely tour of the large homestead garden and perennial nursery, before taking a farm tour by coach. Before returning down country, guests spend the early
vistas to Peak Hill Station at the head of the Lake Coleridge region. The day concludes enjoying afternoon tea, a garden wander and the remote, high country hospitality of the farming family.

The High Country Tour begins one hour’s drive from Christchurch and is open to coach groups all year around, by appointment. Visitors supply their own transport. The tour has been a popular choice for community groups, conference guests and international visitors since 1990.

From time to time the tour itinerary may change. While the tour is aimed at coach tour groups occasionally smaller, self drive groups can be included depending on host availability. Please note the tour includes some gravel road driving.
