The Garden

The Oamaru Public Gardens have a special place the heart of the community and are renowned for their beauty.

Established in 1876 the gardens encompass 13 hectares of magnificent trees and plantings that have an air of maturity greatly enhanced by the water features along the Oamaru Creek’s original passage which meanders through the gardens.

Unique features include the Chinese Gardens, Craig Fountain and the famous Wonderland Statue created by a Scottish sculptor and gifted in 1926. Annual bedding displays colour the front lawn and an immaculate rose garden is a centrepiece alongside the Winter Display House.

There is much more of interest besides: a rhododendron dell and azalea lawn, a fernery in amongst a planting of New Zealand natives.  The distinctive Japanese Bridge over the Oamaru creek leads on to the Chinese Gardens, and the   playground and bird aviary are always popular with children.

The Gardens Pavilion, Band Rotunda and Gazebo are great venues for small events or picnics with an open air environment.
