Green thumbs and garden design aficionados will be delighted to hear that Auckland’s premier
designer garden extravaganza is back after a three-year covid hiatus!

The Auckland Garden DesignFest will be held on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 November 2022, 10 am - 4 pm.

The two-day design event, organised jointly by the Garden Design Society of New Zealand and
Rotary Newmarket, showcases the very best of New Zealand garden design talent whilst supporting
some incredible charities including Lifeline Aotearoa, KidsCan, Garden to Table & OKE.

The event allows attendees to rub shoulders with some of New Zealand’s garden design elite and
visit up to 18 unique, professionally designed gardens. It’s also an opportunity for visitors to ask
questions, take advice and let their gardening imagination and inspiration run wild with ideas for
enhancing their own personal gardens and outdoor spaces. We've got a vast range of gardens varying in size, style, budget and age including ponds and fountains, swimming pools, amazing outdoor rooms and spaces, courtyard gardens, a terrace garden, edible/productive gardens, sculpture, garden art, colour, and planting from clipped and formal, perennials, colour and NZ natives.

Following the success of our previous bus tours, we are offering more this year, visiting a carefully selected range of gardens catering for a wide range of interests.

The tour leaders will be former lecturers in Landscape Architecture Penny Cliffin and Ian Henderson, along with Anna-Maria Morris and Jo Macdonald, both qualified landscape designers. All are long-serving members of the Garden Design Society of New Zealand (GDSNZ).

The Gardener

The Garden Design Society of New Zealand was established in 2002 by a group of enthusiastic professionals working in garden design practice and education. Members of GDSNZ came up with the idea for an Auckland Garden DesignFest after visiting the Melbourne event, run by the Rotary Club of Kew.

The Rotary Club of Newmarket was formed in 1945 and since then its members have been involved in many community projects similar to the Auckland Garden DesignFest.

Rotary's main function as an organisation is to provide its members with the opportunity to be of service to the community either locally or internationally. There are over 30,000 Rotary clubs worldwide providing substantial benefits to mankind.

The Auckland Garden DesignFest is a project that will provide much-needed funds to the selected charities so they can have the greatest positive influence on their communities. The Rotary Club of Newmarket is privileged to be associated with the Auckland Garden DesignFest.

Gardens range in size from a large balcony/terrace to a half acre.

Price
Visitors can choose from $65 for all garden tickets, Seniors tickets for $55, $25 for a three garden pass, $10 single garden entry or take advantage of the Earlybird discount for all garden tickets at $55, for tickets purchased up until 31 October 2022. Booking fees apply when purchasing through iTicket. When purchased from Kings Plant Barn stores or Village Square Trust, Jubilee Building, 545 Parnell Road, Parnell, no booking fees. $40 all gardens ‘access’ tickets for visitors in wheelchairs to visit the 13 gardens we have identified as having suitable or limited wheelchair access,
Parking
Maps will be provided in the event programme and on our website. This is primarily a self-drive event although there are bus tours available. Parking is on street near gardens wherever you can find it!
Wheelchair Access
We endeavour to have a cross-section of gardens included in the festival. Wheelchair-friendly gardens will be identifiable with a wheelchair symbol in the programme and on our website. $40 all gardens ‘access’ tickets for visitors in wheelchairs to visit the 13 gardens we have identified as having suitable or limited wheelchair access,
Dogs allowed?
No pets allowed except for service dogs.
Food available?
A market-style fete will be in one of the Remuera gardens for all sorts of food and refreshments and other goodies. Cafes are available at every Kings Plant Barn store.
Picnics
Picnics are welcome in one of our Remuera gardens. Details in our printed programme available closer to the time.
Children allowed?
Children over the age of 12 or young enough to be carried are allowed. No pushchairs or buggies.
Toilets?
Toilets will not be available within the private gardens (with a few exceptions) but toilet facilities are available at every Kings Plant Barn store across Auckland including the new Stonefields store, Dawson & Co showroom in Parnell (where you can also grab a complimentary hot beverage). Public toilets will be indicated on the event map within the Programme and on our website.
Plants/Sales
A market-style fete will be in one of the Remuera gardens for all sorts of goodies including plants. Plants are available for purchase at every Kings Plant Barn store Auckland-wide.
Guided Tours
Guided bus tours are available - either for the entire weekend or just Saturday or just Sunday. Details are available on the Auckland garden DesignFest website and on our iTicket page listing. The tours will give you an insight into the gardens, and the designers and provide plant selection information with printed notes and plans. At the last garden of each tour, we will round off the day with an opportunity for an informal walk around the garden, a glass of wine in hand. It is primarily a 'self-drive' event although bus tours are available.
