Castlemaine garden is in a rural setting 15mins drive from Lumsden, Southland.
It has been a work in progress over the last 24 years.
A large Macrocarpa hedge, creating shelter from strong NW winds, inspired a vision of creating a large country garden.
Long cold winters and often mild to very dry summers with strong NW winds are normal.
The garden is a country garden, with also an area based on English design. At 200 metres above sea level & inland, we get hard frosts & quite a bit of snow at times. Trees, rhododendrons, roses, bulbs, varied hedging, & plants suitable to this area have been planted. With two small ponds being built over the years.
Spring is probably the best time aesthetically in the garden, but with the four seasons sometimes being quite dramatic, they can be beautiful as well.
Sharon & Peter have lived here for the last 25 years. They have enjoyed developing the garden.
2 acres.
