The Gums

Overview

The Gums is a 2-hectare country garden, that is  5 years in the making. It contains a combination of native and exotic plants, trees, and perennials. We like to create textures and layers that add interest with colour. Our main aim as gardeners is to have colour in the garden for 12 months. So far we are delighted with the progress and confident we are achieving that aim.
The Gardener

The Gums garden has been created by Sue and Simon Nyhof. Sue is the designer and plants person and Simon makes it all come together (the builder of structures and muscle). Together we think that we make a great team.

Garden Size

Our garden is two hectares so please allow 45 minutes to one hour for your visit.

  • Price
    We charge $10 per person to visit.
  • Parking
    When you come through the gates, go past the big gum tree on the right and park on the right hand side of the driveway on the grass. Wheelchair parking is available at the house, please feel free to use this option.
  • Wheelchair Access
    The property is mostly wheelchair friendly, although there is some gravel to negotiate. Wheelchair parking is available at the house, please feel free to use this option.
  • Dogs allowed?
    No dogs, please.
  • Food available?
    The township of Tarras is 3km up the road. It has a lovely cafe.
  • Picnics
    We are happy for people to bring a picnic to the garden.
  • Children allowed?
    Children are welcome but please supervise them as we have a running water race through the property.
  • Toilets?
    We don’t have toilet facilities available but there are public toilets 3km away in Tarras township.
  • Seating
    There is random seating around the garden so please feel free to sit and enjoy.
  • Plants/Sales
    There is a local merino shop in Tarras.
  • Guided Tours
    We are happy to provide a guided tour for an extra $5pp.

If you are coming from the Lindis or Wanaka direction The Gums is 3km south of Tarras township (towards Cromwell). Our address is 2462 Tarras-Cromwell Road. Look for two red letterboxes on your left, then come in the driveway on the right, push the gate opening button and then come in and park on the right-hand side of the driveway past the big gum tree
