Trott’s Garden

371 Racecourse Road, Ashburton, Canterbury

Overview

Trott’s Garden is recognised as an internationally significant and highly acclaimed New Zealand garden in Ashburton. Renowned for its striking and famous Knot Gardens as well as rare plant and tree specimens, accompanied by a spectacular entrance via a 110-metre perennial and herbaceous border. A must-see for any garden enthusiast. This area is divided into smaller gardens, with well-maintained and buttressed Cupressus Macrocarpa hedging.

This flat and well-proportioned garden covers seven acres clothed by rare and beautiful trees. Betula, Magnolia, English Beech and Cornus act as a mantle for the underplanting of Rhododendrons, Perennials and many unusual plants. The way leads to the Red Garden bordered by Berberis 'Little Favourite', the colour scheme highlighted by groups of Berberis 'Hellmond's Pillar' and Sambucus 'Guincho Purple', and then through a Lime Walk.  A large reflecting pool well-planted with Gunnera and many Hosta varieties, sheltered on one side by Silver Birches, is a lovely feature offering photo opportunities from many different directions.

There are over 40 varieties of Maples, Magnolias and Dogwoods, a collection rarely seen in international-quality gardens.

Sweeping lawns lead to Trott’s Belvedere, which surveys a bog and water garden luxuriantly planted with Hosta, Primula, water-loving Iris and other plants. Also seen from this vantage point is a smaller Knot Garden alongside an elegant stand of Betula Utilis 'Silver Shadow'. Two parallel rooms lead from here down to the Brantwood Chapel, through four large and intricate Knot Gardens copied from an old English garden.  As you exit the Knot Garden, the elegant Brantwood Chapel stands before you, in all its glory.
