Botanica is a horticultural complex where the public can come and enjoy a colourful and exotic range of plants. The facility includes a heated conservatory for tropical plants, a cactus house, an extensive fernery, a small Japanese style garden and a shaded garden area.
The origins of Botanica began in 1970 with the construction of the Snow Conservatory. This was later extended with the addition of the Marge Maddren Fernery in 1987. Today the complex has been extended with the development of a specialist filmy fern house and two small outdoor areas. The facility is operated and staffed by the Whangarei District Council on behalf of the Whangarei community.
Botanica is staffed by a small team of knowledgeable and enthusiastic gardeners. There is always a staff member on-site who can assist visitors with information about the gardens and plants.
The entire complex covers an area of about 1 acre. Because of the high density of interesting plants, you may want to allow half an hour to one hour for your visit. Botanica adjoins Cafler Park which has a fine collection of specimen trees, a small rose garden and scented gardens, all in a park-like setting, including a stream and welcoming picnic areas.
