Paterson Park has 6 acres of extensive gardens filled with rhododendrons, trees, plants, hidden paths, small ponds, a creek, tranquil seating areas and more. Lorraine Paterson started the gardens in 1963 who's family began farming here in 1904. The garden is situated on the 746ha with Hereford cattle, Romney and Texel sheep browsing just over the fences.
Waikaka Station is currently home to 3 generations of the Paterson Family who live and work the family property together. Laurie took over the running of the farm from his parents Lorraine and Eric in 1965 and has farmed it ever since alongside his wife Sharon and now his son Ross who lives here with his wife Steph and their three children, Ollie Emmie and Leo who are the 6th generation here on the property.
Sharon and her friend Kaylene have recently restored and developed the gardens, showcasing the decades of love and hard work the gardens have received. The conifers have been allowed ample space to grow; their mature heights create a striking contrast against the smaller colourful flowers, plants and rhododendrons.
Our gardens look lovely during spring and summer when the rhododendrons and flowers are blooming, creating bursts of colour amongst the lush greenery of the conifers and countryside. Then into the gorgeous autumn colours.
We have 6 acres of extensive gardens.
On the hills above Waikaka, Paterson Park and Gardens’ beautiful vistas and spaces will charm you and your guests.
Our extensive gardens give various options to create the desired feeling for your unique garden wedding. Set in a generous six acres, Paterson Park and Gardens’ lush garden provides the perfect ambience and endless photo opportunities, for your garden wedding celebration or special event.
Should the weather be unkind, we have a museum that seats around 60 people. This is one of our rustic barns which used to house grain back in the day of the Clydesdale teams. There are ample parking areas for the bridal party and guests and easy access to the gardens from these facilities.
We love to meet folk from around the globe and are happy to be able to offer a glimpse into farm life here at Waikaka Station. With opportunities to see sheep being shorn (pre-booking required, a minimum of 10), handle fleeces and watch the dogs work sheep in the yards we can provide an up-close and personal experience of some of our farm’s daily workings. Depends on what is happening on the farm.
We have a gift shop with locally made products of which a number are made for our wool. All products in the shop come with their own unique story.
